Cowgirls Earn Gritty 2-1 Victory Over Lamar, First Win vs. Cardinals Since 2018

Lake Charles — McNeese Cowgirl Soccer (4-8-3, 3-2-1) battled their way to a hard-fought 2-1 win over Lamar (5-6-4, 2-2-3) on Sunday afternoon at Cowgirl Field, snapping a six-year drought against the Cardinals.

The Cowgirls came out aggressive and set the tone early. In the 21st minute, Rebecca Romero slipped a perfect pass to Rhiannon Maynes-Tourond, who buried her fifth goal of the season to give McNeese a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The second half was a defensive grind, but the Cowgirls capitalized again in the 65th minute. Vitoria Mitre sent in a well-placed header to Morgan Fiedler, who finished it off to double the lead, 2-0.

Lamar answered quickly. Just five minutes later, Kam Jalayer connected with Sofia Wilby to cut the deficit to 2-1, but the Cowgirl defense held strong the rest of the way to secure the win.

Sunday's result marks McNeese's first victory over Lamar since a 1-0 win back in 2018, making this a statement win in Southland Conference play.
