McNeese Track & Field to compete at Victor Lopez Classic

HOUSTON – Fresh of record-setting performance at ULL last weekend, McNeese's track and field teams will be back in action at the 42nd annual Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice on Friday and Saturday.
 
Events will get underway at 9:30 Friday morning with the men's hammer throw while running events for colleges will start at 7 p.m. with the men's 1500m followed by the women.
 
McNeese will be joined in the field by Arkansas, Columbia, Dallas Baptist, Houston, Houston Christian, Lamar, Louisiana, Loyola-New Orleans, North Texas, Rice (host), Stephen F. Austin, Texas Southern, Texas Wesleyan and UT Arlington.
 
On Saturday, the men's shot put and women's discus will kick things off at noon. Running events will begin at 1 with the men's 110m hurdles followed by the women's 100m hurdles at 1:10.
 
The Cowboys' 4x100m relay team will be in action one week after breaking a 25-year-old school record at the Louisiana Classics. The team is made up of twin brothers Koen and Kalen Beavers, Jaden Powell and Amari Godette.
 
Both Beavers and Godette are currently ranked 2, 4 and 5 in the Southland Conference in the 100m dash while the relay team is first in the league with its record-setting time of 40.05.
 
Also in action and coming off a couple of wins and a personal record at ULL is senior thrower Marcus Francis.
 
Francis won both the shot put and discus events last weekend and finished fifth in the hammer throw with a personal record toss. He's currently ranked No. 1 in the league in the shot put, second in the discus and third in the hammer.
 
Teammate Tyler Challis is first in the conference in the hammer. High jumper Chris Calloura is ranked third in the league and jumper Amire Ledet is No. 2 in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Darren Taylor is ranked third in the javelin.
 
For the Cowgirls, Ashari Jones tops the league rankings in the shot put followed by Jaslyn Russell who is ranked fourth. Faith Cauthron is fifth in the javelin event while the 4x400m relay team is fourth.
