MONROE-- McNeese softball took an early 1-0 lead here Wednesday, but UL-Monroe scored two runs in the third and three in the fourth to defeat the Cowgirls 5-1.
McNeese falls to 11-10 overall and the Warhawks extend their winning streak to 13 games and improve to 15-8 in the year.
McNeese took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Samantha Mundine drew a one out walked then advanced to second on a ground out. Mundine scored the Cowgirls only run of the game off a RBI double to left center by Nijah Fontenot.
The Warhawks took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on a two out, two RBI double to left center by Mea Brown then extended their lead to 5-1 in the fourth inning with three more runs on four hits.
Fontenot led McNeese at the plate with two hits (2 for 3) including a double, the only extra base hit for the Cowgirls.
Kassidy Chance, Mundine,
Rylie Bouvier, and DeLaney Dunham all had one hit apiece.
Maddie Taylor fell to 5-4 on the year with the loss. Taylor allowed five earned runs on six hits with one walk.
Ryann Schexnayder allowed two hits with one strikeout in three innings of relief of Taylor.
ULM picked up eight hits and was led by Jacelyn Buck and Carys Platt, both going 2 for 2 at the plate. Buck led the Warhawks with three RBI.
Maddie Nichols improved to 4-2 on the season with the win after allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks in 4.0 innings.
McNeese will return home on Wednesday to host South Alabama in a single game beginning at 6 p.m.
