McNeese claims 6-4 series finale win over HCU

HOUSTON, Texas – McNeese baseball snapped a two-game losing streak in a 6-4 victory over Houston Christian at Husky Field Sunday afternoon led by Sergio Lopez entering to throw 5.1 scoreless innings in the victory. The Cowboys improve to 11-3 (4-2 SLC) with their first road victory  while the Huskies fall to 9-4 (5-1 SLC) on the season.

Lopez came out of the bullpen in the fourth inning to throw a season high 5.1 innings for McNeese, striking out the final three batters in the ninth for his third win as a Cowboy. The senior moves to 3-0 with three saves in six appearances, earning either a save or victory in every game he's thrown in.

The Cowboys broke open to start the second with four runs to take an early advantage with junior Larry Edwards Jr. scoring the initial run on a single mixed with a fielding error. Redshirt sophomore Easton Dowell plated the next run on an RBI fielder's choice by senior Grant Mangrum.

Senior Simon Larranaga crossed home for the third run of the inning on an RBI single by Conner Westenburg, a fellow senior. Mangrum scored the fourth and final run of the frame on an RBI single by sophomore Mack Brousseau to center field.

HCU tied up the game in the bottom of the fourth, scoring one on a single, another on a fielder's choice, and two on a single by Kenneth Dutka with runners on second and third.

McNeese scored the go-ahead run in the sixth as Davis Meche, a graduate student, crossed home on a wild pitch. The Pokes tacked on an additional run in the ninth as senior Marcus Heusohn hit an RBI double to send home pinch runner Braley Hollins, a redshirt junior.

McNeese remains on the road against UL-Lafayette Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. after shutting out the Ragin' Cajuns 3-0 at home while missing 10 players due to illness.
