SB: Cowgirls Secure SLC Series Against HCU With Friday's DH Win

HOUSTON, Texas---  McNeese softball secured its Southland Conference series at Houston Christian with a Friday night doubleheader win (12-2, 11-0) to improve to 30-17 overall and 16-4 in the SLC. The series will end with a 12 p.m. single game Saturday that is scheduled to stream on ESPN+.

The 30 wins mark the eighth, out of nine seasons head coach James Landreneau has won at least 30 games.  The only season Landreneau hasn't guided the Cowgirls to at least 30 wins was the Covid year (2020) when the season was cancelled after 26 games.

HCU falls to 13-27 overall and 6-14 in the SLC.

The Cowgirls' hitting continued where it left off on Wednesday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.  For the fifth straight game, McNeese has picked up at least 10 hits in each game including 10 hits in both games today.

With continued hitting, comes scoring and several Cowgirls have crossed the plate as of lately.  McNeese outscored HCU 23-2 today and have scored at least 10 runs in four of the last five games including 12 runs in game one and 11 in game two today.  The 23 hits included four doubles and two homeruns.

Delaney Dunham led the Cowgirls on the day with a .571 batting average by going 4 of 7 at the plate with two doubles, seven RBI and scored two runs.

Nyjah Fontenot was credited with four RBI that included a homerun in the first game.

Kadence Williams picked up the win in game one to improve to 9-7 overall after allowing two runs on six hits in 5.0 innings.

Maddie Taylor improved to 13-6 overall with a two-hit, 6.0 inning shutout. Taylor struck out four and one walk in nightcap. Taylor retired five of the first six batters she faced before allowing her first hit of the game to the first batter she faced.  She also allowed her only walk of the game to the second batter in second inning.

Following that walk, Taylor retired the next 11 batters she faced before allowing her second hit of the game, a double to HCU's leadoff hitter in the sixth.

In the series opener, Rylie Bouvier's two out, two run home run gave McNeese an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.  The homerun is Bouvier's second of the season and second in last three games.

McNeese scored two more runs in the third inning to lead 4-0 lead on a Jada Muñoz double to right center that scored Kassidy Chance.  Chance led the inning off with a single up the middle before moving into scoring position on a ground out by Nyjah Fontenot.  Muñoz came home to score on a Husky error.

The Huskies got on the board with two runs on a two-run homerun by Haylie Savage in the fifth inning to cut the McNeese lead in half at 4-2.

After HCU cut the lead to 4-2, McNeese went on to scor eight runs on five hits in the last two innings.

In the sixth, McNeese got those two runs back plus three more on a three-run homerun by Nyjah Fontenot, her second of the season to lead 9-2.  An RBI single to left field by Delaney Dunham scored pinch runners Alie Bishoff and Adriana Mirales for the first two McNeese runs of the inning.

McNeese scored three runs with two outs in the seventh inning to push its lead to 12-2.  Bouvier scored on a fielder's choice by Onna McElroy for a 10-2 Cowgirl lead.  Bouvier led the inning off with a walk.  Dunham's double down the left field line scored McElroy and Adriana Mirales.  Mirales reached base on a fielder's choice.

In the nightcap and for the second straight game, McNeese didn't waste time scoring.  The Cowgirls took advantage of a Husky throwing error to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

It what appeared as though HCU tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the inning on a RBI double to left center by Hanna York, the run was nullified when Haylie Savage was called out at first base for leaving early.

After a leadoff out in the fourth, McNeese picked up three consecutive hits by Reese Reyna, Brylie Fontenot and a RBI single to centerfield by Sarah Allen that scored Reyna for the 2-0
lead.

McNeese broke the game open in the seventh by scoring nine runs on four hits and one Husky error.
