Missed opportunities trouble Cowboys in 4-3 loss to LC

LAKE CHARLES – Missed opportunities troubled McNeese in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to Louisiana Christian in midweek action as the Cowboys left 13 runners on base, nine of those in scoring position.

The Cowboys, now 29-8 overall, saw three different innings with the bases loaded but were unable to get the timely hit to have any cross the plate.

Diego Corrales (0-1) took the loss after being the fifth of seven McNeese pitchers to take the mound. He gave up the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth after the Cowboys tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run by Matt Stancliff.

McNeese finished with eight hits in the game while LC (24-23) added nine. Conner Westenburg recorded three hits in five at bats to lead the way, including a fifth inning lead-off triple.

The Cowboys will return to Southland Conference play on Friday when they open a league series at UTRGV in a matchup against two of the top three teams in the conference standings.

Quoting Coach Justin Hill
"We'll learn from this. I think the thing is, we were just okay. I thought pitching wise, I know we had some strikeouts but I didn't think we were super crisp with it. We've done better on the mound. Offensively, what we do well is keep pressure on them (this season), we just had some pressure-free at bats, we got picked off and did a couple of things that kind of allowed them to breath, and it took away from what we do well."

How it Happened
B2 – Larry Edwards Jr. hit a one-out single through the left side and advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt. Edwards Jr. scored on a two-out single by Larranaga to the left side to make it 1-0.

T4 – Tyler McKenn and Harrison Wax hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Braxton Cook hit one out, two-run double down the left field line to score both runners and give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.

T5 – Gavin Vordik hit a two-out, solo home run over the left field wall to increase the LC lead to 3-1.

B5 – Conner Westenburg led off with a triple to the left-center wall. Matt Stancliff followed with a two-run home run over the right field wall to tie the game 3-3, his second on the year.

T6 – Harrison Wax singled to lead off the inning. Later scored on a one-out ground out by Caleb Duhon to give the Wildcats a 4-3 lead.

Missed Opportunities
B2 – After scoring with two outs, the Cowboys had the bases loaded but a grounder to shortstop got the force out at second to end the inning.

B4 – Had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out but a strikeout and flyout to centerfield left the runners stranded.

B5 – Following a 2-run home run, back-to-back walks put runners on 1st and 2nd with an out but a pickoff at second and a fly ball to left field ending another scoring opportunity.

B6 – The Cowboys loaded the bases with two outs, but another grounder to shortstop and force out to second ended the scoring threat.

B7 – Marcus Heusohn led off with a double to right field but would be left stranded without moving around.

B8 – Loaded the bases for the third time, this time with one out but unable to move anyh across the plate. After Gabe Trahan drew a lead-off, pinch-hit hit-by-pitch, Cole Plowman hit a rocket down the RF line that was ruled a foul after replay confirmed. That would have put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Plowman then struck out. Trahan advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch. Conner Westenburg moved the runner to 3rd with a single to right field then stole second. Stancliff walked to load the bases. Mangrum then struck out and Heusohn flied out to LF to end the inning.
