SB: Cowgirls Rally In Rubber Game To Take Series From Southeastern

HAMMOND---  Reese Reyna has come through in big moments against Southeastern in her McNeese softball career and once again she came through with the big hit in the Cowgirls 5-4 come from behind win over the Lions in Saturday's Southland Conference series rubber game.

In the 2023 SLC Tournament championship game in Lake Charles, Reyna hit the walk off homerun against Southeastern in the eighth inning that sent McNeese to the NCAA Tournament.

Today, Reyna's one out game winning RBI single in the sixth inning scored the game winning run in an inning where McNeese scored four runs on five hits.

Equally as impressive was freshman pitcher Maddie Taylor, who retired all 10 batters she faced in relief of starter Kadence Williams.  Taylor entered the game with two outs in the fourth inning and the Cowgirls trailing 4-1.  Taylor got the Cowgirls out of the fourth and held Southeastern hitless the rest of the way with eight of her 10 outs being ground ball outs. Taylor improves to 11-6 on the season with the win.

McNeese (25-17, 11-4 SLC) ended the game with eight hits.  Six different Cowgirls had at least one hit.  Reyna and Samantha Mundine both picked up two apiece.

Southeastern (32-10, 12-3 SLC) picked up six hits (all singles) in the game.

The Lions didn't waste any time pushing runs across the plate as they took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Chloe Magee stole home for the first run.  Maria Detillier scored the second run on a single up the middle by Maddie Watson.

McNeese loaded the bases quickly in the second inning with two consecutive singles and a fielder's choice by Brylie Fontenot.  A ground out by Sarah Allen scored Bouvier to cut the Southeastern lead in half.

Southeastern extended its lead to 3-1 in the third inning with a run on a RBI fielder's choice by Detillier that scored Magee.  Magee also reached base on a fielder's choice then stole second before advancing to third on an error.

The Lions added a run in the fourth inning on s single to left centerfield by Shenita Tucker that brought Kailey Dixon home for a 4-1 lead.  Dixon singled to left then stole second to move into scoring position.

The Cowgirls bats came alive in the sixth inning when the Cowgirls scored four runs on five hits to take a 5-4 lead.  The Cowgirls put together a string of four straight hits on singles by Kassidy Chance and Nyjah Fontenot followed by a double to left by Jada Muñoz that scored both Chance and Fontenot to pull McNeese to within one run (4-3).  Samantha Mundine's single to center scored Muñoz to tie the game at four all.  After a fly out by Rylie Bouvier, Reyna's game winning RBI single to left scored pinch runner Rylee Eyster to give the Cowgirls the 5-4 lead.
