LAKE CHARLES--- McNeese softball picked up two run-rule Southland Conference wins over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tuesday to open the midweek three-game series. The Cowgirls picked up both wins in five innings, taking the series opener 11-3 and secured the series with a 10-2 win in game two.
A 1 p.m. single game Wednesday will conclude the series. The game will stream on ESPN+.
McNeese outscored Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 21-5 and outhit the Islanders 24-11 in the doubleheader to improve to 27-17 overall and 13-4 in conference action. The Islanders fall to 9-28 overall and 3-14 in the SLC with the losses.
Of the 21 McNeese hits, nine were extra base hits including five doubles, three homeruns and one triple.
Samantha Mundine and
Brylie Fontenot led the Cowgirls at the plate with four hits apiece while
Jada Muñoz,
Sarah Allen, and
Kassidy Chance all had three hits apiece. Muñoz and
Nyjah Fontenot combined for 10 of the 19 RBI's with each player knocking in five runs each.
Freshmen
Maddie Taylor and
Kadence Williams each picked up a win. Taylor improved to 12-6 on the year with the series opening win in relief of starter
Ryann Schexnayder. Taylor allowed one run on three hits without allowing a walk in 3.0 innings. Williams improved to 7-7 overall with the complete game win in the nightcap. Williams allowed two runs on four hits, one strikeout in 5.0 innings and also didn't allow a walk in the game.
McNeese scored the first run of the series on a RBI by Mundine in the first inning that scored Chance.
TAMU-CC's Zoey Stewart gave the Islanders a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a two-run homerun.
Mundine continued her hot hitting by regaining the lead for the Cowgirls with her second RBI of the game in the third inning that scored Chance again to tie the game at two apiece.
TAMU-CC retook the lead (3-2) in the fourth with a single run, but McNeese scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to lead 5-3 before a six run five inning including a three-run walk off homerun by Muñoz to end the game. The homerun is Muñoz's team leading 10
th of the season.
In the nightcap, TAMU-CC took the early lead with two runs in the first inning (2-0), but the Cowgirls responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead, one they wouldn't give up.
Chance led off with single a right center and scored on a RBI double to right center by
Nyjah Fontenot. Fontenot later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at two apiece.
Rylie Bouvier's solo homerun, her first of the season gave McNeese the lead for good at 3-2.
McNeese added a run in the third on a RBI ground out by Bouvier to extend the lead to 4-2 in the third then scored three runs in the fourth and three in the fifth for the run-rule win.
With the bases loaded and the Cowgirls leading 9-2, Muñoz was hit by a pitch that brought Rylie Eyster across the plate to end the game.
