CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas—McNeese women's basketball extended its winning streak to five games with a 59-42 Southland Conference win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday night. With the win, McNeese improves to 13-4 overall and 7-1 in the SLC.
On a night where the Cowgirls didn't display their best shooting from inside three-point range, the Cowgirls shot 53 percent from outside three-point range, making 8 of 15 attempts.
Arianna Patton and
Lexi Alexander led the Cowgirls in scoring with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Patton scored nine of her 11 points from behind the arc where she was 3 of 4. Alexander was 3 of 5 from the field and 4 of 5 from the free throw line and led the Cowgirls with four steals.
Jalencia Pierre added eight points and dished out three assists. Averi Berry was also credited with three assists.
McNeese scored 20 points off 29 Texas A&M-CC (2-13, 1-7 SLC) turnovers and 20 of the Cowgirls points came from within the paint. McNeese, who used its defense to fuel its offense, scored 14 fastbreak points in the game.
The Islanders scored the first point of the game before Jalencia Pierre' two free throws gave McNeese the lead for good.
McNeese held the Islanders to three points in the first quarter and nine points in the second quarter. The 12 points in the first half is the least amount of point allowed by McNeese in a half in program history.
The Cowgirls went on a 12-0 run with 3:41 left in the third quarter and held its largest lead of the game (25 points) with less than a minute left in the third quarter.
McNeese will conclude its two-game road trip in Texas with a 2 p.m. game at UTRGV on Saturday, Jan. 17.
