SB: Cowgirls Bats Come Alive Against UIC Saturday

LAKE CHARLES— For the second day of the Carl Vincent State Farm Invitational, McNeese softball split its games on Saturday, falling 7-5 to Austin Peay before ending tournament action with a 14-4 (5 inning) win against Illinois-Chicago (3-6) to improve to 7-4 on the season.

After falling to Illinois-Chicago Friday night, the Cowgirls' offense looked totally different Saturday against the Flames.  McNeese scored 14 runs on eight hits along with 13 RBI.  Of the eight Cowgirl hits, four were homeruns.

McNeese got off to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning but a four run second by the Flames pulled them to within one.  The Cowgirls scored two more runs in the second inning to extend its lead to 7-4 then scored five runs in the third inning off back-to-back homeruns, a three-run home by Maddie Taylor and a solo homerun by Jada Muñoz

Muñoz went 3 for 5 on the day with all three hits coming as homeruns and collected six RBI and scored four runs.

Rylee Cloud and Maddie Taylor both knocked in four runs apiece Saturday.  Cloud was 2 for 5 at the plate and Taylor was 2 for 6.  Nyjah Fontenot also had three hits on the day.

Taylor also picked up the win against UIC going the distance to improve to 3-0 in the season.

The tournament will end Sunday with a single game at 11 a.m. when UIC will face Austin Peay.

McNeese will return to the diamond next week when the Cowgirls travel to Southern Miss on Tuesday and South Alabama on Wednesday.
