SB: Poncho Doubles In Winning Runs For 8-6 Cowgirl Win Over Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss.—Corine Poncho's two RBI double in the seventh inning proved to be the game winning hit in a McNeese softball 8-6 come from behind win over Southern Miss Tuesday night. The Cowgirls improve to 8-4 with the win while the Eagles fall to 6-6 overall.

McNees picked up eight hits with Corine Poncho leading the Cowgirls with two hits which were both doubles, the last double scored the go ahead runs in the seventh inning to give McNeese the 8-6 lead.

The Cowgirls used five pitchers in the game.  Kynlei Chapman improved to 2-3 with the win.  Chapman allowed one hit in 1 1/3 innings, struck out one and walked one.  Maddie Taylor picked up the save, her first of the season. 

Trailing 6-4 heading into the seventh, McNeese scored its four runs on three hits to retake the lead at 8-6. A double to left by Nyjah Fontenot pulled McNeese to within one run (6-5) and Jada Munoz tied the game at six apiece on a RBI single to left. A double down the right field line by Corine Poncho scored Munoz and Maddie Taylor for the 8-6 lead.

Maddie Taylor came into the game in the seventh in relieve Kynlei Chapman. Taylor walked the first batter she faced then got Kinsley Gordon-Sivley to ground into a double play for the first two outs.  After another walk by Taylor and a single to left to put the winning run at the play, Taylor got Nealy McManus to fly out to center to end the game.

Rylee Cloud, this week's Southland "Hitter of the Week" continued to swing a hot bat and got the Cowgirls on the board first by hitting her fourth homerun this season to give McNeese an early 2-0 lead in the third inning with a two-run homerun.

Southern Miss scored a run in the second to cut the lead in half at 2-1.  The Cowgirls scored two more runs in the fourth to lead 4-1.  Southern Miss scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull to within one run (4-3) then scored three more in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead.

McNeese will travel to Mobile, Alabama to face South Alabama at 5 p.m.  The game will stream on ESPN+. 

The Jaguars (7-4) lost 10-2 in five innings at LSU Tuesday night.
