WACO, Texas—McNeese softball picked up a doubleheader win Saturday over Baylor by the scores of 5-4 and 6-2 to improve to 15-6 overall. The teams will conclude the series with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday that will stream on ESPN+. Baylor falls to 12-6 overall with the losses.
McNeese scored the first run of the game in the opener when
Jada Muñoz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored
Nyjah Fontenot for a 1-0 lead.
Baylor tied the game one apiece in the third inning on a solo homerun by Kaygen Marshall.
The Bears added two run in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead into the sixth inning, that's when the Cowgirl bats came alive. McNeese scored four-run on three hits to take a 5-4 lead.
After
Corine Poncho popped out to short to lead off the inning,
Malayna Daigle drew a one out walk then Alexi Dibbley double to left to put runners on second and third. Following a Baylor pitching change,
Allie Bishoff drew a walk to load the bases.
Kassidy Chance singles in Daigle and Dibbley to cut the lead to 4-3. A RBI sacrifice fly by Fontenot scored Bishoff to tie the game at four apiece then
Rylee Cloud singled to short to score Chance to give the Cowgirls the 5-4 lead.
Pitcher
Maddie Taylor got the Bears out in order in the sixth before reliever
Brookelyn Taylor got Abi Flores to ground out for the first out in the bottom of the seventh. Taylor then struck out Marshall and Jensen Vienne to end the game to pick up her fourth save of the season. Taylor improved to 5-1 with the win. Cloud and Dibbley led McNeese with two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, Baylor jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning but Cloud's two RBI single to left in gave McNeese a 2-1 lead in the second inning. Baylor tied the game at two all with a single run in the third on a bases loaded walk.
McNeese added three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth for the 6-2 lead. A three RBI bunt single by Fontenot in the fourth scored
Meiko Dominguez from second while
Delaney Dunham Fontenot would eventually score on two Baylor errors.
The final McNeese run scored came in the fifth when Muñoz led off with a triple to center and later scored on a RBI single by
Maddie Weeks.
Kylei Chapman picked up the complete game win to improve to 4-3 on the season. Chapman allowed two runs on six hits.
Muñoz led the Cowgirls with two hits in the game including a triple while Fontenot led with three RBI.
