THIBODAUX-- McNeese softball dropped Saturday's Southland Conference doubleheader at Nicholls, dropping the first game 6-5 in eight innings and the second game 5-4 score to fall to 20-12 overall and 4-5 in the SLC. Nicholls improves to 19-12 overall and 7-2 in the SLC.
The SLC series loss to Nicholls is the first since 2019 when the Colonels took the series in Lake Charles. It's also the first sweep of three games or more against the McNeese since 1992.
Nicholls scored five of its six runs in today's first game with two outs and three of its five runs with two outs in game two.
McNeese stranded 10 runners totaled in the doubleheader while Nicholls stranded nine.
The Cowgirls collected seven hits in the opening game on the doubleheader and 10 in the final game of the series.
Nyjah Fontenot and Cassidy Chance picked up two hits apiece in the first game to lead the Cowgirls at the plate while Meiko Dominquez was 3 for 3 in the second game.
Brookelyn Taylor fell to 7-5 on the season after suffering both losses in Saturday's doubleheader.
Game 1
B2- Nicholls took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI double by Kayleigh Lugowski
T3- McNeese scored five runs on four hits in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead.
Nyjah Fontenot's double scored
Corine Poncho to tie the game at one each. The Cowgirls added four more runs with one coming from a sacrifice fly by
Alexis Dibbley that scored Fontenot.
Maddie Taylor put the Cowgirls up 5-1 with a two RBI homerun to centerfield, her sixth of the season. (McN 5, Nicholls 1)
B3- Nicholls scored their second run of the game, again with two outs on a double by Erin Krase (McN 5, Nicholls 2)
B5- Nicholls scored two runs on a two-out RBI to pull to within one run (McN 5, Nicholls 4)
B5- Nicholls tied the game with a two out solo homerun by Gabby Higbee (McN 5, Nicholls 5)
B8- Nicholls walked it off with a one out bases loaded single run to capture the series (Nicholls 6, McN 5)
Game 2
T2- McNeese took and early 4-0 lead in the second inning on five hits and one Nicholls error.
Rylee Cloud scored the first Cowgirl run on an error.

Brylie Fontenot's RBI single up the middle put the Cowgirls up 3-0 and
Kassidy Chances single to left gave McNeese a 4-0 lead. (McN 4, Nicholls 0)
B3- Nicholls tied the game a four apiece by scoring four runs on four hits. The Colonels led their half of the inning off with three straight hits before recording their first out. A single by Krause scored the first Nicholls run. Reagan Heflin's three RBI double to center tied the game. (McN 4, Nicholls 4)
B5- Nicholls took the lead on a Reagan Heflin two out single up the middle. (Nicholls 5, McN 4)
T6- McNeese missed an opportunity to tie the game but left the bases loaded when
Nyjah Fontenot grounded out to first base to end the threat.
