CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – McNeese baseball dropped the series finale to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 9-5, on Sunday afternoon at Chapman Field.
With the loss, the Cowboys fall to 21-18 overall (10-10 Southland Conference), while the Islanders improve to 17-21 overall (6-13 SLC). McNeese returns home Tuesday to host Louisiana Tech, with first pitch set for 6 p.m
. on ESPN+.
McNeese struck first in the second inning as
Isaiah Keller came around to score, giving the Cowboys a 1-0 lead.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi answered with a big inning in the bottom half, plating five runs. Will Stark delivered a bases-clearing double to left-center field to drive in three runs, followed by an RBI single from Jarrett Flaggert and an RBI double from Jaden Reynolds to give the Islanders a 5-1 advantage.
McNeese chipped away over the next two innings. Keller launched a solo home run in the third to cut the deficit to 5-2, and
Connor Walker added an RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-3.
The Islanders responded with three more runs in the fifth inning, extending their lead to 8-3.
McNeese answered in the sixth with two runs.
Danny Barbero scored on a throwing error as Keller advanced, and
DJ Pinkerton followed with an RBI single to bring the Cowboys within three at 8-5.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi added an insurance run in the seventh on a solo home run by Hunter Azemar to make it 9-5.
Carlos Garcia took the loss for McNeese after allowing five runs, two earned, on four hits over 1.2 innings.
Islander starter Connor Schlect earned the win, improving to 2-1 after tossing five innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Preston Watkins recorded the save, pitching the final four innings while giving up two runs on three hits.
