NACOGDOCHES, Texas –
Jaslyn Russell wasted little time stepping onto the medal stand here Thursday on the first day of the 2026 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships as the league's Indoor Female Field Athlete of the Year threw a personal best mark in the hammer throw to claim third place.
Russell's mark of 177-8 came on her third attempt in the flight.
Ta'Khara Johnson placed sixth with a throw of 172-4 to give the Cowgirls nine points in the event. Jumper
Nyla Hicks finished seventh in the long jump to collect two points as the Cowgirls finished the day with 11 total points and in seventh place.
On the men's side,
Michael Brame II threw a personal best mark in the javelin throw at 202-11 to record five points for the Cowboys as they sit in seventh place heading into day two of the three-day event.
In the preliminary rounds, Cowgirl runner
Uxue Castro-Martin qualified to the 1500m finals after running a 4:40.16 to finish third in her heat and 11
th overall. She'll go for a medal on Saturday at 5:20.
The Cowboys had three runners qualify to Saturday's finals (5:30 p.m.) in the 1500m.
Samuel Serrano Borrego recorded the second-fastest time in the event at 3:54.23 to place second in the first heat.
Gregory Martin won the second heat with a time of 4:02.16 to qualify to the finals and
Omer El-Fadl placed second in the third heat with a time of 3:58.42 to qualify.
In all, a total of nine personal records were broken on the day.
Friday's events will get underway at 9:30 a.m. with the conclusion of the combined events. Individual events will start at 12:30 with the men's long jump while running events getting under way at 5:20 with the men's 110m hurdles.
