Barcenas wins silver in 3000mSC on to cap day 2 of SLC Outdoor Championships

| By:
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Jeny Barcenas gave the McNeese track and field team its only medal stand mark on day two of the 2026 Southland Conference Outdoor Championships when she finished in second place in the 3000-meter steeplechase.

The event capped a full day of action that saw the Cowgirls also pick up points in the shot put and javelin events.

The Cowgirls are in eighth place with 26 points heading into Saturday's final day of competition while the Cowboys are in ninth place with five points.

Both teams will have several opportunities to add to their point totals with a full slate of scoring events on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. with the women's discus and men's pole vault events.

On Friday, Jaslyn Russell just missed out on the medal stand with a fourth place finish after throwing 50-4.5 in what was one of the more competitive women's shot put competitions in recent memory. The Cowgirls collected two points in the javelin event with Sydnie Cooley's seventh place finish after throwing 138-7.

Two Cowgirl runners fell victim of the qualification rules that kept them from advancing to their respective event finals.

Alexandria Stewart recorded a personal record in the 400-meters with a time of 55.67 which ranked as the eighth-fastest in the group. However, each heat winner automatically qualifies for the eight-person final. The winner of the first team ran .14 seconds slower than Stewart but was awarded the finals spot due to her heat win.

The same occurred to Fancy Jelagat in the 800-meters when she ran a 2:13.70 for the eighth-fastest overall, but the winner of the third heat ran a 2:14.01 but was awarded the finals spot.

All four Cowgirls in the 400-meters recorded PRs. Along with Stewart's mark, Jashyra Thomas ran a 55.75, Keelei Dorsey 56.53, and Janayah Dotson 56.98.

Also recording PRs on the day were Adriana Chavarria with 4334 points in the heptathlon and Sarah Davidson with 3691 points, also in the combined events. Davidson set a new PR in the 800m portion of the hept with a time of 2:35.64. Kennah Bent broke two PRs in the combined events, first in the javelin where she threw 91-5, then in the 800-meters with a time of 2:45.22.
