NACOGDOCHES, Texas – McNeese used a five-home run performance to claim a 7-1 win over Stephen F. Austin in Sunday's Southland Conference series finale at Pilgrim's Park.
With the victory, the Cowboys improve to 25-23 overall and 13-14 in league play, while the Lumberjacks fall to 25-24 (13-14 SLC).
McNeese jumped out to an early lead as
Easton Dowell opened the game with a leadoff home run on the first pitch.
Isaiah Keller followed later in the inning with a solo shot to right field to give the Cowboys a 2-0 advantage.
Stephen F. Austin scored its lone run in the second inning on an RBI single from Coby DeJesus that plated Josh Ibe to make it 2-1.
The Cowboys added to their lead in the fourth inning when
Hayden Stringfellow connected on a solo home run to right field, extending the margin to 3-1.
McNeese broke the game open in the sixth inning.
Danny Barbero led off with a home run to center field before
Marcus Heusohn drove in two runs on a single to right field, aided by a fielding error, to push the lead to 6-1.
Barbero added his second home run of the game in the eighth inning to account for the final 7-1 margin.
Connor Achee earned the win in relief, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings while allowing two hits. Stephen F. Austin starter Dylan Mulcahy suffered the loss after giving up three runs on four hits over 5.0 innings with six strikeouts.
McNeese returns to action May 7 to open its final regular season conference series against Northwestern State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
