LAKE CHARLES—McNeese volleyball picked up a thrilling four set win over Oral Roberts (25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 29-27) on the final day of the Cowgirl Classic on Saturday.
The win is the fourth straight for the Cowgirls who improve to 4-7 overall while the loss drops ORU to 6-5 on the season. The match is the final match before the start of Southland Conference action next week.
"This was fun. The best part about it was calling upon our bench in the second set and them stepping up," said head coach
Tayler Gray. " I think we had a little luck on our side in the second set until we caught back up then everyone started to do their job. I need to give a shout out to
Mary-Alice Dohmann for doing her job and
Neal Grace Berry who served for six straight points to give us the lead. We need to continue to rely on our depth."
Kayla Wilson and
Ava Henry once again led McNeese's offense in kills with 17 and 14, respectively.
Corynne Hausler ended the match with a double double (23 assists, 10 digs), her third double double of the season.
Sophia Tocmo picked up her first career double double with 13 assists and a career high 33 digs. Henry also led the Cowgirls with four blocks.
"This match resolidified the importance of practice and staying ready and staying focused.
We want to put out a quality product. We want McNeese volleyball to be exciting and passionate and our No. 1 job is to play clean and healthy volleyball."
SET 1
• The set started out back and forth for the first seven points until
Corynne Hausler served for four straight points to put the Cowgirls up 8-3.
• With McNeese leading 13-11, the Cowgirls scored the next three points on kills by Grose,
Carli Banks and Henry for the 16-11 lead.
• McNeese took advantage of two ORU errors and got a kill from
Gabbie Maldonado to lead 23-16.
• A kill by Harmony Sole followed by an ORU hitting error ended the set.
SET 2
• ORU jumped out to a 14-7 lead, but
Neal Grace Berry used the service line to bring McNeese to withing one point. Berry served for six straight points to cut the lead to 14-13.
• ORU would respond by scoring the next four point to lead 18-13.
• A response by McNeese with five straight points tied the set at 18
• After ORU took the lead 19-18 on the next serve, McNeese scored four straight point to take a 21-19 lead.
• ORU tied the set at 21 apiece on a kill and an ace
• With the set tied at 22,
Ava Henry's kill put McNeese a 23-22 lead and
Corynne Hausler kill gave McNeese the 24-22 lead.
• ORU scored the next point (24-23) before Wilson's kill ended the set for a 2-0 overall match lead.
SET 3
• ORU took the early lead before McNeese scored four points off the serve of
Sophia Tocmo for a 5-2 lead.
• McNeese extended its lead to 17-11 but ORU outscored McNeese 10-4 to tie the set at 21 apiece
• The set would tie up again at 22 and 23 before ORU's Elyse Dube gave the Golden Eagles the 24-23 lead.
• A kill by Khylie Remmenga would seal the third set win (25-23)
SET 4
• ORU once again jumped out to the early lead (8-4), but
Kayla Wilson took over behind
Carli Banks' serve with three kills along with two ORU errors to take a 10-8 lead.
• The set stayed close the resto of the way and with ORU on point away (24-21) from forcing a fifth set, McNeese went on a 4-0 run to take a 25-24 lead.
• The set would tie up three more times with the last being at 27 apiece.
• Henry put down two kills to give McNeese the 29-27 fourth set win and the overall match win.

McNeese will remain home to host UTRGV next Wednesday, Sept. 23 in its Southland Conference opener and the final home match of its three match homestand.
