The Cowgirl program is no stranger to playing a tough non-conference schedule and this season isn't different. The Cowgirls are also scheduled to play at nationally ranked Texas on Dec. 17.
"This will be a good test for us," said head coach Brooks Donald Williams. "These games are meant to help us prepare for our conference schedule, conference tournament and hopefully into the postseason. Our young players need to experience the atmosphere like Texas A&M will have."
McNeese (3-1) will look to build on its momentum coming off its 57-55 come from behind win over Southern Miss on Sunday. Junior
Allison Baggett continues to pace the Cowgirls in scoring with 15.5 ppg. Junior
Jayln Johnson is averaging 9.0 ppg.
Senior
Talisa Boyd, who is coming off her first career double-double (12 pts. 16 reb.) against Southern Miss, is leading the team with 6.8 rpg. and a 75.0 field goal percent. Freshman
Frederica Haywood is averaging 6.3 rpg. and freshman
Ann Nwosah is averaging 5.0 per contest.
McNeese will have to have the same type of rebounding they had against Southern Miss in the second half against the Aggies, who have three preseason All-Americans on the team. Junior guard Courtney Walker was just added to the Wooden Award and the Wade Trophy Watch List earlier today. Both awards are presented to the top player in women's college basketball. Guard Jordan Jones and forward Courtney Williams were also preseason All-Americans in various publications.
Walker, an AP All-American a year ago, is averaging 18.0 ppg. this season and was the 26
th Aggie player to record 1,000 career points on Nov. 19 against Rice.
Texas A&M leads the all-time series 8-2 over McNeese. The Aggies have won eight straight games against McNeese dating back to 1981. In 2011, Texas A&M defeated McNeese 87-47 in Shreveport in the Cowgirls' first NCAA Tournament appearance. That year the Aggies went on to win the National Championship. The Aggies have won the last five meetings in College Station and are 6-1 all-time at home against the Cowgirls.
