Pokes Fall to SLU in Sunday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HAMMOND, La.  - The McNeese State baseball team could not withstand an offensive attack by Southeastern Louisiana in Sunday's Southland Conference series doubleheader as the Cowboys dropped the first game of the day in a 15-4 decision before falling to the Lions 9-2 in the nightcap.

The loss dipped the Cowboys to 22-18 this season and 12-8 in league play while SLU improved to 30-11 and a league-best 14-4 on the year.

The Pokes will be back in action on Tuesday as they welcome the University of Houston to Lake Charles for a mid-week contest scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

GAME ONE: Southeastern Louisiana 15, McNeese State 4

McNeese struggled to get any offensive momentum going in the first of two games on Sunday as the Lions pounded out 18 hits and 15 runs to clinch the series over the Cowboys.

SLU limited the Cowboys to just seven hits throughout the ballgame while McNeese was led at the plate by senior Andrew Guillotte who batted 2-for-4 with a run scored. Junior Connor Crane recorded two RBIs in the game while freshman Joe Provenzano extended his reached base streak to a team-high 15 games with a double during the game. Provenzano has now hit safely in nine of his last 10 games.
Starting pitcher Ethan Stremmel (3-4) was charged with the loss after tossing the first 1.2 frames and giving up four runs on five hits and two walks.

The Lions were able to gain an early lead late in the second inning as they used four hits and three walks to go up on McNeese before tacking on two more runs in the next frame to take a 6-0 lead over the Cowboys.

McNeese cut into the lead during the fourth inning as junior Billy Sommers sent a base loaded sacrifice fly deep into left field to make it a 6-1 ballgame.

However, the Lions extended their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom side of the fourth and fifth innings to and go up by nine runs over the Cowboys.

In the latter part of the ballgame, McNeese was able to scrape across three runs in the seventh frame before SLU used four runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 15-4 over the Cowboys.

GAME TWO: Southeastern Louisiana 9, McNeese State 2

The Lions jumped out to a three run lead early during the second game of the doubleheader following a pair of RBI hits in the second inning that gave SLU a 2-0 lead over McNeese.

Southeastern Louisiana extended its lead in the third inning after scoring five runs to go ahead of the Cowboys 8-0.

The Pokes were able to cut into the lead in the top of the seventh inning as Matt Gallier reached base on a fielder's choice while a throwing error allowed Lewis Guilbeau to score while Gallier scored on an RBI-hit from junior Cameron Toole to make the score 8-2 in favor of the Lions.

SLU tacked on another run in the bottom of the seventh for a seven run lead over the Cowboys.

Bryce Kingsley (3-4) was dealt the loss for the Cowboys after giving up eight runs off of seven hits and three walks in 2.2 frames of work. He fanned three in the process.

Four McNeese relievers combined to throw the final 5.1 innings of the game and allowed only one run to score despite scattering five hits and two walks.

Guilbeau led the team offensively during the contest batting 2-for-2 along with a run scored. Toole was credited with the only RBI during the game while Gallier plated the team's second run in the contest.
