Box Score 2 BEAUMONT, Texas—McNeese bounced back from an 8-7 first game loss to Lamar here Friday night with a 5-1 second game win to even the series one game apiece in front of a stadium record crowd. The rubber game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday.
Just like in the opening game, McNeese took an early lead in game two but didn't give up the lead and
Jamie Allred threw a one-hitter and struck out seven to improve to 13-3 on the season.
McNeese scored three runs in the second inning and added another run in the third for a 4-0 lead.
Taylor Goree continued her hot hitting and gave the Cowgirls a 2-0 lead with her third double of the night. A triple by
Justyce McClain scored Aubree Tuberville for a 3-0 lead.
Emily Vincent's RBI single extended the lead to 4-0.
It was Goree who made an outstanding diving catch then flipped it to
Erika Piancastelli at third for a double play in the third inning to avoid Lamar from scoring.
The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a solo homerun by Sable Hankins, her fifth of the season and the seventh given up by Allred this season.
McNeese scored a run in the sixth inning after McClain singled to left field and advanced all the way to third on an error. McClain would cross the plate on a single by
Marisa Taunton for a 5-1 McNeese lead.
Allred was determined not to let Lamar make a comeback like they did in game one as she retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
McNeese pounded out 11 hits and held the leagues top hitting team to only three hits in the nightcap. Taunton, Tuberville and McClain all picked up two hits apiece. Goree was responsible for two of the five RBI's in the game.
After holding Lamar scoreless for four straight innings, the Cardinals erased a 7-3 deficit by scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the first game of the series 8-7.
A walk off single by Kelly Meeuwsen scored Stephanie Meeuwsen and Ashley McDowell for the game winning runs.
Lamar's comeback began when Brynn Baca led the seventh frame off with a single then a bases clearing double by Ashley McDowell and a Cowgirl error allowed Lamar to score three runs to cut the lead to 7-6. Sarah Ragsdale was intentionally walked to load the bases. Cowgirl second reliever Allred struck out Maddy Myers for the first out before Meeuwsen hit the game winner.
McNeese opened up the game by taking a 5-0 lead in the first inning on three hits and one Lamar error. The Cowgirls loaded the bases after the first four batters. A leadoff walk by Piancastelli got the scoring started.
Hailey Drew was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Lamar pitcher Ciara Lune also hit
Morgan Catron to load the bases with one out.
Emily Vincent hit a bloop single just behind third base to a 1-0 lead. A double by
Taylor Goree scored two more for a 3-0 lead.
Shanice Hagler singled up the middle for a 4-0 lead and Goree scored on an error for a 5-0 lead.
Lamar scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 5-2 ballgame on three this. A one out triple by Jenna Holland scored Baca who reached base on a singled to center. Holland scored on a single to make it a 5-2 game.
Vincent ran into a little trouble in the second inning but got out of what could have been a huge inning for Lamar. Vincent gave up two straight hits to Lamar's first two batters. Vincent got Rodriguez to go down looking for the first out and both runners advanced on an error trying to pick off the runner on second base. Baca drew a walk to load the bases and then another walk issued to Holland cut the McNeese to 5-3. With the bases loaded and two outs, Vincent struck out Sable Hankins to end the threat.
Just like Lamar in the second inning, McNeese also had a chance to do a lot of damage in the fourth. After retiring 10 straight Cowgirls, Luna struggled to get the Cowgirls out in the fourth but came away allowing only one run to score. McClain and Piancastelli both single and move up one base on a pass ball. After fouling off five pitches, Drew was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Yanitor drew a walk to score McClain for a 6-3 Cowgirl lead. Luna got out of the inning by striking out Catron.
The Cowgirls scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh, thanks to Goree's second double of the game with two outs. Vincent singled through the right side with two outs then Goree hit a ball over the centerfielders head for a double to score Vincent for a 7-3 lead.
Goree and Vincent led the Cowgirls with two hits apiece. Both of Goree's hits were doubles and she picked up three of the six McNeese RBI's. Allred suffered only her third loss of the season (12-3) in relief. Vincent started the game and gave up three earned runs in five innings before giving way to
Jolie Trahan. Trahan also gave up three earned runs off one hit in only one inning before Allred replaced her. Allred gave up two earned runs on two hits before Lamar scored Lamar won the game.
