LAKE CHARLES – With two matches left on its regular season slate, the McNeese women's tennis team will make the trek east looking to wrap up one of the top Southland Conference Tournament seeds with contests against Southeastern Louisiana at 11 a.m. on Saturday and New Orleans at 11 o'clock Sunday.
McNeese (13-7, 6-3 SLC) sits in third place of the league standings and has the chance to capture the No. 2 seed for the postseason with wins over Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans this weekend. With Abilene Christian, who sits second in the regular season standings, ineligible for postseason play, the Cowgirls are able to lock up second place before entering the SLC Tournament on April 22-24 at the Schlief Tennis Center in Nacogdoches, Texas.
'This weekend we are closing our regular season with two very important matches," said Cowgirls head coach
Helena Besovic. I have a lot of respect for both SLU and UNO. At this point of the season the most important thing for us is to keep our focus high. We have had a good week of practice and are going confident into the weekend."
The Cowgirls will look to rebound from a tough loss to Northwestern State last Sunday. McNeese has faced some tough opposition over the last three weekends with matches against league-leading A&M-Corpus Christi as well as Abilene Christian and the Lady Demons. However, the Pokes still hold one of the best combined singles records in the conference with a 82-37 record over opponents. In doubles action, McNeese is 25-19 as a team.
Southeastern Louisiana (13-7, 5-4 SLC) has won three of its last five contests but has failed to capture a conference win in its last three attempts. The Lady Lions hold a 7-2 record on their homecourt and are 2-1 in SLC play at home. SLU currently sits fifth in the regular season standings.
New Orleans (12-4. 5-3 SLC) sits a match behind McNeese in the league standings and enters with an impressive home record of 7-0. The Privateers are on a four-match win streak and will face Nicholls the day before squaring off with the Cowgirls.
