Cowboys move scrimmage to Saturday morning at 10

LAKE CHARLES – Thunderstorms have been a thorn in the side of the McNeese Cowboys during preseason football camp thus far.

The threat of bad weather on Saturday has forced first-year head coach Lance Guidry to move up the originally scheduled scrimmage from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. in the hopes of beating out the weather.

The Cowboys are looking at getting about 100 plays in which will include some third down and overtime situations.

The scrimmage will be held in Cowboy Stadium and is open to the public.

"Hopefully we can get the scrimmage in," said Guidry. "We've been dodging rain and lightning all camp so hopefully we can get it in by moving it up to the morning.

"We're looking at going right at about 100 snaps. The 1s, 2s and 3s will all go about 20-25 snaps apiece. We have some third down situations and after that we'll do some overtime. So we're looking to get roughly around 100 snaps."

Guidry says he's expecting the defense to keep flying around the ball while the offense will be looking to possibly see some separation among the three quarterbacks in the running for a starting spot.

"All the quarterbacks have been very competitive," said Guidry. "I think it's starting to shuffle around a little bit already but we haven't done anything with the depth chart. Everybody is still getting the same amount of reps. But I think after tomorrow there will be some movement on the depth chart. After that we'll take it on to the next week and go to the next stage.

"We're looking for different things out of that position. We're looking for a guy that can make everybody else around him better. That's No. 1 no matter if he's on 1s, 2s or 3s. And we're looking for a guy that's consistent but also can make plays himself – makes great throws or extend some plays, whatever it may be."

McNeese will hold its annual football media day at 5 p.m. on Sunday in Cowboy Stadium then will return to the practice field on Monday as it enters its final week of preseason camp before classes begin on Aug. 22.
