Softball Hosts ULM Wednesday

LAKE CHARLES—After dropping two heartbreaking losses last Saturday at the LSU Classic, McNeese softball bounced back with a 6-0 shutout win over Penn State on Sunday to conclude tournament play. The Cowgirls will carry that momentum into Wednesday's 6 p.m. home contest against Louisiana-Monroe.

McNeese (3-3) will look to remain undefeated at home after picking up a 4-1 win over Southern Miss last Thursday in the Cowgirls' season opener.
 
The Cowgirls have five players batting over .300 and are led by junior Morgan Catron's .368 average. Erika Piancastelli is batting .350 while Marisa Taunton, Baylee Corbello and Shanice Hagler are batting .333. Catron and Piancastelli both lead the Cowgirls with seven hits apiece.
 
Senior outfielder Tori Yanitor swung the hot bat over the weekend at the LSU Tiger Classic. Yanitor hit two three-run homeruns, both against Penn State and accounted for eight RBI including all four runs in the 4-1 win over Penn State on Friday and three of the six runs in the 6-0 win on Sunday.
 
In the circle, the Cowgirls are led by junior Jolie Trahan's 2.62 era with a 1-1 record. Trahan is coming off her first career shutout in the win over Penn State on Sunday. Senior Rachel Smith also has a 1-1 record with a 2.69 ERA and senior Baylee Corbello is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA. Corbello leads the pitching staff with seven strikeouts.
 
Louisiana-Monroe (4-1) is coming off its own Mardi Gras Tournament that saw the Warhawks pick up three of its wins in five inning games with wins over Prairie View A&M (10-0), Sam Houston State (12-0), Grambling State (10-1) and Northwestern State (8-5). Its only loss of the season was a 2-1 setback to SIUE last Saturday.
 
Sidney Coy leads a host of Warhawks batting over .400. Coy is hitting .600 with three hits in five at bats. Vanessa Garcia (.545), Sydney McKay (.538), Jayden Mount (.533) and Melanie Coyne (.444) are all hitting above the .400 mark. Mount leads ULM with eight hits and is tied for a team high eight RBI along with Cheyanne Lyon.
 
Paige Porter is 2-0 in the circle with a 1.80 ERA while Rachel Murphy is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA. Coyne is 1-1 with a 0.60 ERA.
 
The Cowgirls will take to the road again this weekend when the will travel to Mobile, Alabama to take part in the South Alabama Mardi Gras Invitational. The Cowgirls will face Jackson State on Friday, Butler and South Alabama on Saturday and Murray State on Sunday.
