LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese baseball team completed the three-game Southland Conference sweep of Stephen F. Austin on Sunday afternoon as the Cowboys scored ten runs over the final three innings en route to an 11-1 run-rule victory at Joe Miller Ballpark.
The series sweep marked the first time since 2014 that the Pokes (15-5, 6-0 SLC) swept back-to-back league series. McNeese has now won its first six contests to begin conference play, extending already its longest SLC winning streak in school history. The sweep over SFA (8-13, 0-3 SLC) was also the first for McNeese since the 2015 season.
The Pokes are now tied for the third-longest home winning streak in the country at 13 dating back to last season. The 11-0 home mark this season is tied for second best with Arizona.
Ricky Ramirez led the Cowboys offensively, finishing 3-for-4 overall with four RBI, the most for a McNeese batter since Ramirez also drove in four runs against ULM back on March 15. Perhaps, the most impressive performance of the week belonged to
Matt Gallier as he finished with a .500 (8-for-16) clip after four games along with a double and three homers with five runs driven in.
Six total Cowboys had two or more hits in Sunday's game including
Robbie Podorsky who pushed his hitting streak to 13 straight games while
Shane Selman followed suit and has now hit in 10 consecutive games.
With the score knotted up in the fourth inning, the Cowboys exploded for three runs, highlighted by
Joe Provenzano's lead-off home run. The tater was Provenzano's third this season as he upped the lead to a 2-1.
Nate Fisbeck and
Dustin Duhon each drove in a run to put the Pokes up by three.
Ramirez and Gallier each contributed an RBI in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-1 ballgame in favor of the Cowboys.
McNeese put the game away in the sixth as it used five hits and five runs to go up 11-1 over the Lumberjacks. Ramirez drove in two of the five runs scored off of a triple deep into right center while Selman drove in two more runs following a double and an error from SFA.
McNeese starter
Bryan King (3-1) picked up the win for the Cowboys after allowing just one run off one hit and three strikeouts over his 5.0 innings.
Grant Anderson helped the Pokes get out of the sixth while
Peyton McLemore closed out the contest.
The Pokes return to action Tuesday evening as they make the trip to New Orleans for a mid-week contest with Tulane at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Both squads are slated to kick off the action at 6:30 p.m.
