BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – McNeese Cowboy sprinter was a double-winner at Friday's Samford Indoor Invite as the senior won the 60-meter dash with a personal record time of 6.75 then captured first place in the 200-meters with a mark of 21.63.
 
Smith's performances highlighted a stellar day for both the Cowboys and Cowgirls indoor track and field teams, both that saw a handful of freshmen post some impressive performances.
 
In addition to Smith's victories, fellow Cowboy sprinter Terrell Banks squeaked out a win in the 400-meters with a time of 49.215 and won the event by .002 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay team comprised of Morgan Frederick, Kobe Nevills, Jakalub Rhodes and Ethan Rapp won the race with a time of 3:23.54.
 
In the field events, Lentz Similien won the triple jump with a measure of 48-feet, 6-inches.
 
For the Cowgirls, Alanna Arvie won the weight throw with a mark of 59-6.25 and placed second in the shot put at 43-11.25. Freshman Malaiya Jedkins finished second in the triple jump at 38-9.50 and Aleyah Donald was second in the 60-meter dash at 7.62, setting a new PR in the process.
 
Also on Friday, McNeese's Terren Gills and Marcellus Boykins wrapped up competition in the men's heptathlon with Boykins placing seventh with 4,363 points to set a new PR while Gills finished in ninth place with 4,263 points.
 
McNeese will be back in action on Friday when it hosts its only college indoor meet of the season.
 
TRACK NOTES:
• Smith's 6.75 in the 60m dash currently ranks him No. 2 in the Southland Conference rankings while his 21.63 in the 200m ranks him fifth.
• Similien's triple jump mark of 48-6 has him ranked No. 4 in the league.
• With her time in the 60m, Donald is not tied for third in the SLC.
• Freshman Malaiya Jedkins is ranked No. 5 in the league in the triple jump at 38-9.50.
