Greg Holmes shot a 2-under par 69 in back-to-back rounds on the final day of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Mississippi here Tuesday afternoon to improve the Cowboys' final standings while helping the team post the fifth-lowest score of the final round.

With his 69s in both the second and third rounds, Holmes ended the tournament in 21
st place on the individual leaderboard with a 54-hole total of 212. Teammate
Reid Giardina was close behind by finishing tied for 26
th after ending the tournament with a 1-under 70 to post a three-round total of 215.

As a team, McNeese finished 10
th out of 16 teams as its 281 in the final round lifted it into its final standing. The Cowboys shot a 289 in the second round, which was postponed on Monday afternoon due to severe weather and resumed on Tuesday morning.

"We had a solid performance from out team today," said first-year head coach
Derek Plucienski. "We improved each round."

Southland Conference member Sam Houston State won the team title at 33-under par with rounds of 274-272-273 for an 819 total while Southern Miss and Troy tied for second with scores of 829.

After shooting a 3-over 74 in Monday's first round, Holmes was 3-over through nine holes of the second round before catching fire by birdying four of seven holes to end with a 69.

In his third round, he was 1-over through eight holes then got to even par with a birdie on No. 11. Five straight pars followed before he sank an eagle on the par 5 No. 17 to get him to 2-under.

"Greg finished with two good rounds to complete his debut as a Cowboy," said Plucienski. "Overall, that's not the finish we were looking for but there are a lot of positives to take away. It's a long season. We need to learn and apply. I see this group improving from week to week."

Louis Talarczyk finished off the tournament with a sub-par round after shooting a 1-under 70 and ended with a score of 219 (77-72-70).
Jack Hearn followed with a 224 (73-75-76) and
Theo Berger scored a 228 (81-75-72).

Sam Houston's Noah Steele took the individual title after shooting an 18-under par with rounds of 65-63-67.

The Cowboys will return to action next Monday and Tuesday when they take part in the UTSA Lone Star Invitational at the TPC San Antonio.
