Plucienski era opens with Cowboys at Sam Hall tourney

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The McNeese Cowboy golf team will tee-off 2019-20 season under new head coach Derek Plucienski on Monday when it takes part in the Sam Hall Intercollegiate which is hosted by Southern Miss and played at the Hattiesburg Country Club, a par 71, 6,902-yard course.
 
The first two rounds will be played on Monday beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, while the final round will tee off at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

Plucienski, who was named the Cowboys' head coach in late May, was an All-Conference USA golfer for Southern Miss during his playing days and served as the team captain in 2011-12.
 
"I am extremely happy to start our season at Hattiesburg Country Club," said the first year coach. "It's been a long summer, and I know I speak for myself and the team in saying we're ready to compete."
 
Three familiar and two new faces has been set for McNeese's lineup.
 
Sophomore Theo Berger is listed at the team's No. 1 player followed by senior Reid Giardina at No. 2, newcomer freshman Greg Holmes at the three spot, newcomer freshman Louis Talarczyk at No. 4 and sophomore returner Jack Hearn at the five spot.
 
Hearn earned all-conference third team honors last season after posting a 74.10 scoring average to rank second on the team and 21st in the league while Giardina posted a 76.14 mark last season and Berger a 78.5 average.
 
"We have three experienced players in Theo, Reid and Jack, and the two freshmen, Greg and Louis, will have their first starts as Cowboys," said Plucienski. "Both (freshmen) have played on the national stage and have been successful.
 
"I have the utmost confidence in this group this week and look forward to starting our season in a positive fashion while representing our great University."
 
Joining McNeese in the 16-team field will be the host team Southern Miss, Southland Conference foes Sam Houston State, Central Arkansas, Nicholls, Southeastern Louisiana, New Orleans, Houston Baptist and Incarnate Word; as well as Troy, Missouri State, North Alabama, Oral Roberts, Samford, Austin Peay, and Appalachian State.
 
McNeese will be paired with Southern Miss, Sam Houston State and Troy on the first day.
