Cheplak earns All-Region honors; Cowboys 7th, Cowgirls 13th

WACO, Texas – McNeese's Gideon Cheplak led the Cowboys at Friday's 2021 NCAA South Central Region Cross Country Meet, garnering All-Region honors with a 23rd place individual finish as both the Cowboys and Cowgirls stayed true to their regional rankings with the Cowboys placing seventh and the Cowgirls 13th in their respective meets.
 
Both teams entered their races ranked in the regional top 15 poll the exact places they finished. The men ran a 10k while the women a 6k.
 
The Cowboys were the top finishing Southland Conference team, collecting 242 points and trailing sixth place Texas A&M by just five points. Texas won the race with 35 points followed by Arkansas with 39, Arkansas State 166, Lamar 200 and Rice 201 to round out the top five.
 
Cheplak paced the Cowboys by finishing 23rd with a time of 31:44.2, just seven seconds off from placing in the top 20. Henry Kiplagat followed him in 36th place at 32:16.0 and Jacob Kipkogei ran a 32:31.5 for 48th place and giving the Cowboys three finishers in the top 50 out of 173 runners.
 
Other Cowboy runners included: Elias Loriposia (67th, 33:01.4), Omer El-Fadl (88th, 33:29.5), and Joey Croft (97th, 33:50.6).
 
Arkansas won the women's title with 27 points followed by Rice at 96, Texas 101, LSU 116 and Abilene Christian 135 to round out the top five.
 
The Cowboys finished with 356 points to place 13th and was fourth among Southland Conference schools (New Orleans, 9th; Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 10th; UIW, 12th).
 
Pamela Kosgei led the Cowgirls in 53rd place with a time of 22:16.6. Alissa Lander finished in 61st place with a 22:29.8 clocking while Aurelia Jepkorir ran a 22:38.7 to place 69th. Other Cowgirls times saw Sorcha Moloney run a 22.59.8 (90th), Bonnie Andres at 23:36.6 (115th), Ciara Gilroy 23:46.4 (125th), and Danna Diaz 24:22.6 (141st).
 
The top two teams advance to the NCAA Championships next Saturday in Tallahassee.
