LAKE CHARLES –  McNeese softball will look to extend its winning streak when the Cowgirls travel to Houston Wednesday for a midweek contest against the Houston Cougars. The game will be aired on ESPN+. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Cougar Softball Stadium.
Due to COVID-19 protocols outlined by Houston Athletics, attendance for the 2021 season will be pass-list only and limited to the student-athletes and coaches of the home and visiting teams.Â
McNeese (7-12) is coming off a 4-0 weekend at its own Cowgirl Classic II where McNeese picked up two wins apiece against UTSA and Texas Southern.
For the Cowgirls,
Kaylee Lopez and
Alayis Seneca or both batting over .300 with Lopez leading the way with a .345 average and Seneca with a .325 average.
Cori McCrary who has played the last few game in the outfield, leads the team with 17 hits, five home runs, 12 runs scored, and is tied for a team best 12 RBI and four doubles.
Haylee Brinlee also has 12 RBI on the season and leads the squad with 11 walks while
Caylon Brabham also has four doubles on the year.
The Cowgirls pitching staff is led by
Jenna Edwards' 2.08 ERA and wins by
Saleen Flores (3-3). Edwards (2-1) is coming off a weekend where she picked up one win and two saves. Freshman
Ashley Vallejo (1-3) leads the staff with 26 strikeouts while
Whitney Tate (1-5) has thrown a staff high 42.2 innings.
Houston (7-9) enters the game on a four-game losing streak after falling 9-0 in five innings at No. 7 Texas and dropping a three-game series at Texas State last week.
Following Wednesday's game, the Cowgirls will return home for its next five games including its Southland Conference opening series against Central Arkansas this weekend. Â
