LAKE CHARLES –  McNeese softball will spend the better part of its week in San Antonio, Texas to play a non-conference game at UTSA Wednesday night before a three-game Southland Conference series at Incarnate Word on the weekend.
"We want to pitch the ball well this week as well as play fast and clean," said head coach
James Landreneau. "This biggest thing is to play mistake free softball. Our focus remains on us and we need to make sure we do the little things in the game right."
McNeese (22-21) will carry a four-game winning streak to UTSA (11-20), a team the Cowgirls defeated twice (6-5 and 3-2) at the Cowgirl Classic II in early March.
"Those were two great games. They have some big bats, and they swing it well. The hardest thing is to beat a team three teams but at the end of the day we have to pitch really well."
The Cowgirls are coming off a SLC home series sweep over Abilene Christian where the Cowgirls outscored the Wildcats 22-1 over the series that included two shutout victories and one run-rule win. Â
McNeese will enter Wednesday's game with a nation's best 35 double plays turned and 0.81 double plays per game following its eight double plays turned in the ACU series.
Three Cowgirls enter the week batting over .300 with
Kaylee Lopez leading the way with a .312 Â average along with 29 hits, 12 RBI and eight doubles.
Alayis Seneca is second on the team with a .307 average with 23 hits, and
Cori McCrary is batting .300 with a team best 39 hits, 11 doubles, seven home runs and 23 RBI. Her 11 doubles also lead the conference.
In the circle where the Cowgirls have used four pitchers throughout the season are led in victories (7) by
Whitney Tate who is 7-7 on the year with a 3.49 ERA.Â
Jenna Edwards. Edwards is currently 6-1 on the year with a 2.14 ERA and four saves.
Ashley Vallejo is 4-6 with a 3.75 and a staff high 58 strike outs.
Saleen Flores (5-7) has a 6.11 ERA and two saves.
UTSA had its four-game winning streak snapped with an 8-0 road loss at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Wednesday.
