HOUSTON – McNeese Cowgirl jumper Malayia Jedkins leaped to new distances on Saturday at the 16
th Annual J Fred Duckett Rice Twilight Meet where she broke a 28-year old school record in the triple jump.
Jedkins finished second in the event after jumping 42-feet, 5 ½-inches to break the old mark of 41-10.5 that has been held by NaTosha Barber since 1993.
The record-breaking performance highlighted several impressive finishes by the Cowboys and Cowgirls as they continue to prepare for the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships.
Distance runner
Gideon Cheplak clocked one of the fastest times in school history in the 5,000-meter run with a first place time of 14:19.60.
Matthew Madrey placed first in the 200-meter dash at 21.60 and Terrill Banks had a first place finish in the 400-meters at 48.15.
On the women's side,
Blanche Beard won the javelin event with a throw of 140-11.
Aurelia Jepkorir placed second in the 5000-meters at 17:26.67 and
Alanna Arvie was third in the hammer throw with a toss of 203-3. The Cowgirl 4x100 relay team made up of Jedkins, Washington, Heath and Andrews, finished third with a time of 46.20.
McNeese will be back in action on May 1 at the Texas A&M Alumni Muster in its final tune-up before the May 14-16 conference championships.
