LAKE CHARLES – As McNeese softball closed out its first week of spring intrasquads, sixth year head coach James Landreneau has seen the team pick up the intensity. Practices mimic game speed that is aimed to prepare the Cowgirls for their upcoming season.  

"We don't want to just check boxes," said Landreneau. "We want to be extremely competitive. There is always a winner and a loser." 

The coaching staff put the players in stressful situations with either an offensive or defensive advantage. 

"We underestimate how hard it is to be under game stress. We are training the team to have the mental capacity for tournaments and doubleheaders." 

It is the consistency of bringing high intensity to practice and games where the media has predicted an easy win that will differentiate a good team from a great team.  

On Friday, McNeese softball and baseball will be hosting their annual Diamond Dinner at the Magnolia House from 6-9 p.m.  

The fundraiser has been essential in supporting the student athletes and growing the program in everything from the gear, technology for scouting and players, travel, and meals. All the money raised at the event goes right back to the student athletes. Tickets are available for purchase both online and at the door.  

This week will close out with Saturday's rings ceremony during the women's basketball game against Nicholls at 1 p.m. at the Legacy Center. Softball alumni will be given free admission into the basketball game.
