THIBODAUX – The McNeese Cowboys and Cowgirls cross country teams each finished in fourth place at the 2022 Southland Conference Cross Country Championships at the Nicholls Farm on Friday morning with a couple of Cowboy runners picking up individual honors.

Cowboy sophomore
Omer El-Fadl earned Second Team All-Southland Conference honors after he paced McNeese with an eighth-place finish in the 8k race with a time of 24:18.81.

In addition, freshman Evans Kemboi was named the league's Freshman of the Year following his 13
th place finish at 24:36.10, making him the fastest freshman in the field to cross the finish line.
Jacob Kipkogei placed 11
th overall, second for McNeese, with a time of 24:29.55 and Gilbert Kimutai was 15
th at 24:45.98, giving McNeese four top 15 finishes, matched only by champion UIW. Kemboi is just the third Cowboy to be named SLC Freshman of the Year since the award was started in 2006 (Stephen Kerr 2012, Brian Flanagan 2017).

James Hyland was the fifth scorer for the Cowboys, placing 34
th overall with at time of 25:47.22. Other Cowboy runners included
Elias Loriposia (26:10.00), Abdullah Elkhair (26:25.85),
Filippo Squassina (26:43.79), Desmond Kiplimo (27:22.31), and Obied Mohamed (29:36.14).

The Cowboys tallied 81 points, the same as New Orleans, but the Privateers top five scorers were just seven seconds faster than McNeese in average time to give UNO the team third place finish. UIW won the team title with 62 points followed by Lamar with 72. After UNO and McNeese, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was fifth with 119, Texas A&M-Commerce 143, HCU 152, Nicholls 220, Northwestern State 274 and Southeastern 317.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Dennis Kipngeno won the individual championship with a time of 23:49.15.

The Cowgirls scored 103 points to follow behind champion UNO (32), Lamar (87) and UIW (91). HCU placed fifth with 118 points, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (130), Nicholls (130), Texas A&M-Commerce (230), Southeastern (236), and Northwestern State (304).

McNeese had two runners place in the top 20 – Pamela Kosgei in 13
th place with a time of 21:31.64 while
Sorcha Moloney finished 17
th at 21:50.69 in the 6k race.

Newcomer Jasmine Perez finished 23
rd overall at 22:14.45,
Ciara Gilroy was 24
th at 22:14.55, and
Grace Sullivan finished 26
th with a time of 22:21.51 to round out the Cowgirl scorers.

Other McNeese runners included Irene Barreiro-Lopez (23:12.09) and
Bonnie Andres (23:45.22).

UIW's Joy Gill won the individual title with a time of 20:24.59.
