LAKE CHARLES – McNeese softball will continue its Texas road trip when it heads to the Houston Classic this weekend Feb. 18-19 to face No. 1 Oklahoma, Houston, and Texas State. Â
The Cowgirls (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday night at the gloves of No. 11 Texas (5-1). Â
McNeese will open the tournament against five-time national champion Oklahoma (5-0) Friday at noon. Â
The Cowgirls have faced Oklahoma twice in 2015 and 2019 with the Sooners leading the series 2-0. Â
The last time the Cowgirls beat the number one team in the nation was during the 2012 season when the Cowgirls defeated Arizona State 3-1 at the Kajikawa Classic. The winning pitcher was Tiffany Denham who is the older sister of first year Assistant Coach Alyssa Denham. Â
"Anytime you can beat any of these teams it's great. Anytime you play a program that is traditionally a great team you know you will be tested to the max," said head coach James Landreneau. "We train for playing against the best and we will get that opportunity twice this weekend."Â
Following Oklahoma in Friday's action, the Cowgirls will take on home team Houston (4-1) at 6 p.m.Â
The Cougars and the Cowgirls have exchanged wins since 2006 with McNeese leading the overall series 8-7. Last season, the Cowgirls swept the Cougars in home and home competitions. Â
On Saturday, the Cowgirls will challenge Texas State (2-1) at 10 a.m. before facing Oklahoma a second time at 12:30 p.m. to close out tournament action.Â
Since the Bobcats left the Southland Conference in 2012, the two teams have met twice (2015, 2017), defeating the Cowgirls narrowly by one run in both contests.Â
The Cowgirls will return home to host the Evangeline Bank and Trust Invitational II Feb. 24-Feb. 27. Â
