LAKE CHARLES - After jumping ahead early on a Tre' Obregon III RBI triple, a three-run fourth inning by Stony Brook (1-1) was too much to overcome as the McNeese Cowboys (1-1) fell short in game two, 7-3. Starting pitcher Ty Abraham had a solid day on the mound pitching to a tune of 5.0 innings with one earned run and five strikeouts. He faced the minimum in three of his five innings. The Cowboys were able to score three runs off of SBU starter Josh O'Neill in four innings but were unable to mount any rallies against lefty relief pitcher Colton Book the rest of the day.
Key Moments:
- Tre' Obregon III hit a two-out RBI triple to drive in Payton Harden to give the Pokes a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
- Ty Abraham escaped a no-out, bases-loaded situation only allowing a run in the second inning.
- Stony Brook jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a rally that included a triple, a balk, and an error.
- Peyton Johnson hit a leadoff double in the fourth and later scored on a two-run triple by Andruw Gonzales which closed the gap to one. It was Gonzales first career hit as a Poke.
- A ground-rule double in the fifth gave Stony Brook a 5-3 lead and they would tack on two more runs in the later innings.
Notes:
- Three players made their Cowboy debuts: C Andruw Gonzales, P Zane Zeppuhar, and P Davis Burgin. Gonzales went 1-4 with 2 RBIs and a triple. Zeppuhar worked the sixth inning and Burgin struck out both batters he faced in the ninth.
- Brad Burckel went 2-4 with two singles.
- Obregon's triple was the third of his career and his second two-out RBI hit in as many games.
- Cooper Hext made his first start of the season in right field.
- Chance Stone made his first appearance in nearly a year after being out with injury. He pitched 2.1 innings with one earned run and four strikeouts.
