LAKE CHARLES – McNeese softball returns home to host Southern Miss (18-11) in a 6:30 p.m. midweek game Wednesday, March 23 at Joe Miller Field at Cowgirl Diamond. 

 The game will be the final game before the Cowgirls (12-14) open conference play with a three-game series at Texas A &M Corpus Christi. The series will begin with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday, March 25 and will conclude with a single game at 12 on Saturday, March 26.  

The Cowgirls are coming off a three-game series at Baylor last weekend that saw McNeese drop the opening game before splitting Saturday's doubleheader.  

"We had the opportunity to win two games against Baylor, but we let one slip away," said head coach James Landreneau. "We were not outmatched but made some mistakes that we can correct. Right now, it is the one inning that we lose focus and give up runs in bunches." 

Jil Poullard leads the Cowgirls with a .340 batting average, a .623 slugging percentage, 14 walks, four doubles, three home runs, and 33 total bases. Alayis Seneca and Poullard are tied for the most RBIs (12). Josie Willingham trails Poullard with a .307 batting average, a .373 slugging percentage, and 28 total bases. Willingham leads the team with 23 hits.  

Following a 2-0 week, pitcher Shaelyn Sanders (4-0) leads the Cowgirls with a 2.16 ERA along with nine strikeouts in 32.1 innings. With a 3.14 ERA and 71.1 innings of action in the circle, Ashley Vallejo (5-6) leads the Cowgirls with 52 strikeouts. 

The last meeting between the Cowgirls and the Golden Eagles was in 2020 when McNeese left Hattiesburg, Mississippi with a 4-1 win.  

"Southern Miss has a couple of arms that can minimize damage. They are tough and aggressive so we know that it will be a good match up."  

The Golden Eagles will enter the game having lost six of their last seven games including a 2-1 C-USA road series loss to Middle Tennessee. 

Tata Davis leads Southern Miss with a .351 batting average and 34 hits, and 24 RBI. Destini Brown leads with a .671 slugging percentage, 24 walks, 31 runs scored, three triples, and six home runs. Morgan Leinstock (11-5) leads the pitching staff with a 2.09 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 117.1 innings pitched.
