LAKE CHARLES—McNeese women's tennis returned to the Nancy Hank Tennis Center for the first time this season and the Cowgirls didn't disappoint the fans in attendance with a 6-1 Southland Conference win over Southeastern here Friday afternoon.
"I'm very proud of the girls," said head coach
Giorgia Pozzan. "They had a goal set to beat Southeastern and they went out and took it from them. It was great to be back on our courts and the team definitely put on a show for the fans."
For McNeese (3-13, 1-3 SLC) it marked the first Southland Conference win of the season for the Cowgirls who will close out the regular season at home with SLC matches against NW State on Sunday at 11 a.m. before hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in its home finale next Saturday, April 9.
The Cowgirls battled through the double's competition before the team of
Matilde Mulatero and
Carlotta Romito defeated Bogi Csordas and Polina Sleptsova 6-4 on court No. 3 to claim the double point for a 1-0 lead.
McNeese went on to win two more singles matches for a 3-1 lead before
Yukina Abe defeated Kate Oborina 6-3, 7-5 on court No. 5 to clinch the match and extended the lead to 4-1.
Southeastern (2-14, 1-4 SLC) picked up its only win of the day from Putrina Insani who defeated
Matilde Mulatero 6-4, 6-2 on court No. 1.
Other Cowgirl wins came from
Carlotta Romito on court No. 2,
Aina Domingo-Bernabeu on court No. 3,
Natalia Ballo on court No. 4, and
Ariane Monlleo Sanchis on court No. 6.
Romito ended up retiring on court No. 2 due to an injury. Romito and Polina Paunova's match was tied at one set apiece.
McNeese will return to the Nancy Hank Tennis Center on Sunday, April 3 for an 11 a.m. match against Northwestern State.
