LAKE CHARLES - Gabrielle Moore, a Southwestern Athletic Conference and HBCU National Champion tennis coach, has been named head coach for the McNeese Cowgirls, Director of Athletics Heath Schroyer announced on Monday.
Moore, the 2022 SWAC Coach of the Year, has spent the last five seasons as both the men's and women's head coach at Jackson State where she guided the Lady Tigers to a SWAC championship and NCAA Tournament berth this past season with a 17-7 overall mark and perfect 9-0 in conference play. In addition, the men's team finished second on the league standings and advanced to the championship of the SWAC Tournament.
A total of six of her players - three women and three men, earned All-SWAC honors.
"I'm so excited to have Gabrielle join our team," said Schroyer. "Coach is a winner and a leader. I just fell in love with her passion and enthusiasm for the sport of tennis and her student athletes.
"Getting another championship sitting head coach to come here speaks volumes about where we our department is, and more importantly, headed. This program needs to be rebuilt and I'm extremely confident we got the right coach and personality to get this program back to the top of the Southland."
Moore began her coaching career at Lake Forest College in August 2015 as an assistant coach where she helped lead the women's team to its first conference title since the 2003 season while posting a 13-4 record. The next year, she joined Jackson State as an assistant for the men's and women's program before taking over as the head coach in November of 2017.
In the fall of 2017, she led the men's team to the HBCU National Championship as well as guiding the women's team to a second place finish in the nation.
Moore was also a standout player where she was a four-time SWAC Champion and All-SWAC recipient from 2012-15 as a member of the Southern Jaguars. She participated in the NCAA Tournament in both 2012 and 2013.
Moore received her Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Southern in May 2015.
