LAKE CHARLES—McNeese women's tennis picked up a 5-2 win over Stephen F. Austin Saturday at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center to improve to 9-2 on the year.
"We showed incredible fight today," said first year head coach
Gabby Moore. "We have struggling with the doubles point lately, and although we came up short, I think it's the best doubles we've played thus far. Our girls came together and fought for each other and played to win. Matches like today are preparing us for what's ahead."
Stephen F. Austin (8-6) took the early lead by winning a very competitive doubles point where the Ladyjacks won two of the three matches.
The Cowgirls came out in singles play with a vengeance and won five of the six matches to seal the win their fourth match in the last five outings. Four out of the six singles matches for McNeese were straight set wins by
Emma-Lou Pommiers,
Tiana Fox, Natalie Ballo, and
Maria Wang Martinez.
Heta Nuutinen won her match in a three-set tiebreaker.
"I really applaud the girls for fighting back after losing a nail biting doubles point and playing relentless in singles. We knew SFA was going to come out and compete since they have been on a roll after picking up some good wins in the last couple of weeks.
McNeese will travel to Baton Rouge on Monday, March 13 where they will meet Bradley for a 2 p.m. match then will play at Loyola (N.O.) at 12 p.m. on Friday, March 17.
