SB: Torres Named LSWA Newcomer of the Year

BATON ROUGE-  Sophomore second baseman Mariana Torres has been named the 2023 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Softball Newcomer of the Year, announced by the organization. Stat are reflected through conference tournaments.
 
Torres, the native of Pflugerville, Texas is one of seven Cowgirls named to the team.  Joining Torres is senior pitcher Whitney Tate who was named to the first team.  Torres was a second team selection as well as sophomore shortstop Reese Reyna and senior outfielder Alayis Seneca.  Junior pitcher Ashley Vallejo and sophomore third baseman Rylie Bouvier were honorable mention selections.
 
Torres led the team in RBI, tied for doubles and was third on the team in hits while collecting 10 games with multiple RBI.
 
Tate, the native of Columbia, La. led McNeese with the lowest ERA, innings pitched, and shutouts. Tate was second on the team in strikeouts and recorded a career high 10 in the win over Tennessee State on March 4.  Tate also tossed three-one hitters in her final season.
 
Reyna, who hails from Santa Fe. Texas led the team in stolen bases and tied for a team high in runs scored.  Reyna was second on the team in batting average, hits and walks and third in RBI.  She produced 15 multiple hit games along with two homeruns - both coming during the SLC Tournament including the walk-off homerun in the SLC Tournament championship game.
 
Seneca, the product from the Woodlands, Texas also concluded an outstanding career by leading the team in batting average, on base percent, and his.  Seneca also tied for a team high in runs scored and was second in stolen bases.  She recorded 17 multiple hits games and had a team high 16 game hitting and reached base streak.
 
Vallejo is from New Waverly, Texas led the team in wins, innings pitched, and strikeouts.  She recorded 100 strikeouts for the second straight year and struck out a career high 14 against NW State along with tossing three one-hitters.
 
Bouvier, another product of Santa Fe, Texas was third on the team in runs scored and fourth on the team in hits and RBI.
