Cowboys conclude homestead against Alcorn

LAKE CHARLES, La. – McNeese Baseball (13-12, 1-2 SLC) will conclude its nine-game homestand with a two-game midweek series against Alcorn (2-18, 2-7 SWAC) April 2-3 at Joe Miller Ballpark.
 
Tuesday's matchup is scheduled for 6 p.m. while Wednesday is slated at 2 p.m. Both games will have live stats available to follow along.

Both teams have faced off five times before with the Cowboys coming out on top each time, the last being a 23-1 win in 2022. Poke Nation has averaged 15 runs a game against the Braves with 75 in total.

McNeese is coming off a conference opening weekend in which they faced Northwestern State, winning the series opener 8-2. The Demons ultimately claimed the series in the final two games.

Alcorn recently played Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a three game series in which the team picked up its second win of the season.

Following the two games, the Cowboys return to conference play against Lamar on the road.
 
 Series Preview 
• Both teams first met in 2019 with five meetings since, the Cowboys taking all five. 
• When the teams last met for a four-game series in 2022, McNeese outscored Al­corn by a combined 67-3. 
• All five meetings between the schools have taken place in Lake Charles.

• Cooper Hext is third in the nation with five triples on the season. Hext leads the conference while Grant Mangrum is sixth in the SLC with two. 
• Alexis Gravel's seven starts place him 23rd in the nation and tied with 12 other players for the top spot in the conference. 
• Gravel is 33rd in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings at 12.81 which is sec­ond in the Southland. 
• The Cowboys have earned at least six hits in 22 of 25 games this season. 
• Cameron LeJeune owns the 87th most saves in D1 baseball at three on the season before moving to a more prominent starting role. 
• Elliot Hebert owns the team's longest hitting streak at eight games, making his first start of the season against UL-Lafayette. 
• The NCAA ranks McNeese as having the 28th-hardest strength of schedule in the nation through Thursday's games after taking on ranked opponents in Arkansas and Texas A&M, the second-to-last undefeated team. 
• Cooper Hext was named to the SLC Preseason All-Conference Second Team. 
• McNeese was slated to finish fifth in the conference in the SLC Preseason Poll. 
• The Cowboys have 23 returners on the squad with 17 newcomers for the season.

Scouting the Opponent 
• Alcorn earned its second victory of the season and second con­ference victory over the weekend when they bear Arkansas- Pine Bluff 8-7 in the series opener. 
• The Braves' first win came against Mississippi Valley State 7-5. 
• Against similar opponents, Alcorn has lost to Southern 4-10, 2-10, 7-14, 4-19, PVAMU 14-15, and beat MVSU 7-5.
