LAKE CHARLES –
Conner Westenburg, McNeese All-Southland Conference outfielder and Rawlings Gold Glove winner, has signed a free agent contract with the San Diego Padres.
The four-year McNeese letterman and school record holder for most lead-off home runs hit, slashed .328/.429/.561 with seven home runs, 33 RBIs, nine doubles, and led the Southland Conference with nine triples and 27 stolen bases.
He'll report to Arizona on Sunday to begin his professional career.
"I'm super excited to continue my career," said Westenburg. "I had a couple of offers during the draft buy my advisor suggested that we pass. I'm going in with the mindset of competing and playing as hard as I can and to just have fun playing the game I love."
Westenburg will be the seventh former Cowboy currently playing in the pro ranks.
