Nyjah Fontenot led McNeese softball at the plate in an 11-4 win over Iowa here Thursday in a rare afternoon weekday game. The win lifts the Cowgirls to 13-6 overall while Iowa drops to 10-5 overall.
Fontenot was 4 for 5 at the plate with one double and one home run, a three-run homerun, her third of the season.
Brookelyn Taylor improved to 5-1 on the season with the win. Taylor struck out a career high nine and walked only one in 5 1/3 innings.
McNeese took a 3-0 first inning lead on a three-run homerun by
Maddie Taylor, her fourth on the season.
After Iowa scored single runs in the second and third innings to cut the lead to 3-2, the Cowgirls added three more runs in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by
Meiko Dominguez,
Adriana Mireles, and
Nyjah Fontenot to extend the lead to 6-2.
Fontenot gave McNeese a 7-2 lead after she scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.
Iowa scored two runs in the sixth on a RBI single and a RBI double to pull to within 6-4.
McNeese tacked on four runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to lead 11-4.

Maddie Weeks for an 8-4 lead then Fontenot put the Cowgirls up 11-4 with a three-run homerun. The long ball is Fontenot's third of the season.
The Cowgirls will travel to Baylor this weekend for a three-game series beginning with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and ending with a single game on Sunday.
