SB: Nyjah Fontenot Named SLC Hitter of the Week...Cowgirls Travel To Houston Tuesday

LAKE CHARLES—  McNeese junior Nyjah Fontenot has been named this week's Southland Conference hitter of the week after hitting .412 with seven hits including one double, 10 RBI and scored six runs in helping McNeese to a 3-2 record last week with a home win over Iowa and a two road wins at Baylor on Saturday to clinch the series.
 
Fontenot and the Cowgirls will travel to Houston (14-6) on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. single game that will stream on ESPN+.
 
McNeese (15-7) will meet the Cougars for the third time this season after splitting games at the Cajun AC Louisiana Clash two weeks ago.  McNeese won the first game 7-3 and Houston won the second game 9-1.     
 
Rylee Cloud leads the Cowgirls with a .410 batting average, 22 RBI and is tied for a team high five homeruns.  Nyjah Fontenot is batting .405 with a team high 30 hits and 21 runs scored.  Jada Muñoz (.345), Corine Poncho (.310), and Maddie Taylor (.300) are all hitting above .300.
 
In the circle, freshman Brookelyn Taylor is 5-2 on the season with a staff low 3.52 ERA.  Taylor also leads the staff in innings pitched (47.2) and strikeouts (34).  Kynlei Chapman is 4-3 on the season with a 3.89 ERA and Maddie Taylor is 5-1 on the year with a 4.04 ERA.
 
Houston is coming off a 3-2 record at the Texas Longhorn Invitational where the Cougars picked up wins over St. Bonaventure, Incarnate Word, and Prairie View while their two losses came against Texas and Prairie View.
