Dominant outing leads to weekly award for Nachtsheim

LAKE CHARLES – Three days after hurling the best game of his career, McNeese junior pitcher Eric Nachtsheim has been selected as this week's Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week.

The junior from Reno, Nevada pitched a gem in Friday's 4-2 win over HCU in the second game of a doubleheader, throwing a complete-game three-hitter, allowing just the two runs while striking out a career-high 16 batters. He faced 30 batters on the day, three above the minimum.

He retired 12-straight batters at one point, striking out seven of those including six consecutive when he fanned the side in both the fifth and sixth innings.

For the season, Nachtsheim is 3-0 on the season with a 1.17 ERA and one save. He started the season coming out of the bullpen but has since been moved to the starting rotation where he's made two straight starts. He's thrown 23 innings, struck out 39 batters with only six walks, and is holding opposing hitters to a .157 batting average.

Nachtsheim leads the Southland Conference in both total batters struck out and strikeouts per nine innings (15.3), ranking sixth and 12th respectively in the NCAA. He's also first in the league and 20th in the nation with three wins and is one of only 31 pitchers in the country to throw a complete game.

Nachtsheim is the second straight Cowboy to earn player of the week honors. Last week, Matt Stancliff was named hitter of the week for his outstanding performance.
