FRISCO, Texas – After a record-breaking performance in claiming the individual championship at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, McNeese senior golfer
Blake Elliott has been named the Southland Conference October Golfer of the Month, league officials announced on Wednesday.
Southland Athletes of the Month are presented by MidSouth Bank.
In addition to Elliott's first collegiate win in Hawaii, the Liberty Hill, Texas native placed second at the Quail Valley Collegiate two weeks prior.
His tournament-winning performance tied a McNeese and Louisiana record after he shot a 63 in the second round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational and followed that up with a 67 for a 54-hole total of 198, a career-low.
During the month of October, Elliott shot under par in seven of the nine rounds played, while also shooting in the 60's for five of those rounds.
The award marks the first Golfer of the Month honor for Elliott during his career at McNeese.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
Earning honorable mention honors were William Holcomb of Sam Houston State, Angelo Leyvani of Stephen F. Austin, and Baker Stevenson of Nicholls.
