STANFORD, Calif. –
Blake Elliott shot an even-par 70 in Thursday's first round of The Goodwin, and will head into Friday's second round in a tie for 11
th place and just three shot out of first place.
As a team, the Cowboys are in 18
th place in the 27-team field after shooting a 294, 14-over par, on the day. The field is loaded with 14 teams that are ranked in the top 100 in the nation and five of those in the top 20.
Playing in the morning session and beginning on hole No. 10, Elliott, the 18
th-ranked player in the nation, was 2-over after nine holes after he bogeyed No. 10 and hit a double bogey on No. 15. A birdie on 13 then birdies on holes 3 and 7 helped him get back to even par.
Sutton Farmer and Nick Mattner each shot a 4-over 74 while
Jack Hearn finished with a 76 and
Reid Giardina a 78. Giradina was the only Cowboy to score an eagle on the day, that coming on the par 5 No. 7 hole.
Washington tops the team leaderboard with a 2-under 278 followed by 31
st-ranked Stanford with a 279, No. 6 USC and No. 11 Cal 286, and No. 35 Oregon, Colorado and Santa Clara at 287 to round out the top five places.
Three players are tied atop the individual leaderboard at 3-under par – former Cowboy Daniel O'Loughlin of Colorado, Derek Ackermann of Santa Clara, and David Snyder of Stanford.
