LAKE CHARLES – The Southland Conference released its 2023 baseball schedule on Friday and the defending league champion McNeese Cowboys will host four, three-game series including the 2023 SLC Baseball Tournament May 24-27.
The Cowboys will open their league slate March 24-26 at home against Nicholls then will hit the road March 31-April 2 with a visit to HCU. Following that, McNeese will host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (April 6-8), visit Southeastern (April 14-16), host New Orleans (April 21-23), play at UIW (April 28-3), host Lamar (May 5-7) and will visit Northwestern State (May 12-14) in the final conference series of the season.
The Cowboys posted a 34-23 record last season and topped the league standings with a 15-9 mark before falling to Southeastern in the SLC Tournament two games to one in the championship series.
In regular season conference action, McNeese went 2-1 against Nicholls, 4-2 vs. HCU, 2-1 vs. AMCC, 3-0 vs. Southeastern, 0-3 vs. New Orleans, 3-0 vs. UIW and 1-2 vs. Northwestern State. McNeese and Lamar did not play last season since Lamar was a member of the WAC.
The Cowboys cruised through the SLC Tournament opening round, defeating UIW 12-6, Nicholls 8-4, and UIW again 7-2 to advance to the championship series where they beat Southeastern 6-5 in 12 innings in game one before falling 3-2 and 11-7.
McNeese will open the 2023 season in mid-February. The entire schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
