BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – Ten McNeese Cowboy and Cowgirl track and field athletes will begin competition at the 2022 NCAA East Preliminary Round on Wednesday at the Haugh Track & Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University.

"With one of the largest groups of qualifiers in recent years, it's definitely exciting to be back here with this special group," said head coach Brendon Gilroy who was recently named the SLC Women's Coach of the Year after leading the Cowgirls to their first-ever team championship. "Many of the ladies were leaders on and off the track during this historic season. Six women in six separate events shows the strength of the women's team this season.

"The men have two (event) entries due largely to sophomore transfer Jalon White (400m and will anchor the 4x400 relay). Qualifying a relay is special since it incorporates the team aspect of track and field. They'll need to rely on each other, which they have done all successfully all year."

Cowboy sprinter Jalon White will be the first in action when he runs in the first round of the 400-meter dash on Wednesday at 6:25. White, a bronze medalist in the event at the SLC Championships, is ranked 36th in the region and will compete in the sixth and final heat of the round. The 400 quarterfinals are scheduled for 5:50 p.m. on Friday.

White will also run the anchor leg in the 4x400-relay which will hold its quarterfinals at 7:45 p.m. on Friday with the finals being run at 7:45 p.m. on Sunday. Joining White on the team, which won a silver medal at the SLC meet, will be Richard Lee, Ondray Miles and Terrell Banks. Omer El-Fadl will serve as an alternate.

The Cowgirls have six athletes entered with half competing on Thursday and the other half on Sunday.

Conference champion Blanche Beard will kick things off for the Cowgirls on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the javelin event. Beard is currently ranked No. 28 in the region with a best mark of 159-2.

At 5 p.m., Dreunna Washington, conference champion in the long jump, will compete in that event. Washington is currently 35th in the region with a mark of 20-2.5. Capping off Thursday will be Janell Fullerton in the shot put. The conference champion will begin competition at 6 p.m. She's currently ranked No. 26 in the region with a throw of 53-3.

Sunday events for the Cowgirls will see conference champion Sakari Famous compete in the high jump beginning at 1:30 p.m. Famous is ranked 12th in the region with a mark of 5-11.5. Also on Sunday, Malaiya Jedkins and Morgan Talley will take part in the triple jump starting at 5 p.m.

Jedkins, the silver medal winner at the conference championships, and Talley, are tied for 41st in the region with marks of 41-8, both which were acquired on their final jumps at the NSU Demon Last Chance Meet to qualify the two to the East meet.

"The name of the game now is to execute and perform like they did to make it (to the preliminaries) and advance onto Oregon in a couple of weeks," said Gilroy.

The top 12 in each event will qualify to the NCAA National Championships June 8-11 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon and on the campus of the University of Oregon.
